Why Indian prescription drugs are less expensive:
It is less expensive to manufacture pharmaceuticals in Asia for the same reason it is less expensive to manufacture shoes,
clothing, cars, etc. Nearly all factors of production - labor, land, raw materials - are less expensive in Asia. Thus, the
final product can be made and sold for a lot less, whether it's Banana Republic skirts or Ford SUVs. Drugs are also less
expensive in the Indian market because the Indian population has a lot less income to spend on health care. The per capita
expenditure on health care in India is around $10 a year. Thus, drugs cannot be sold in India for anywhere near
the markup applied to US markets.
Patent law in many Asian countries differs from that of the West. In India, where the majority of Asian (and many American)
pharmaceutical products are produced, pharmaceutical patents only protect the process by which a drug is produced, not the
drug itself. This is a policy aimed at promoting development and competition and reducing prices. It's a policy that
numerous nations have used historically, including Japan and the United States. Under a 1995 WTO agreement called TRIPS,
Indian manufacturers can legally reverse-engineer drugs and produce an identical product to a patented drug as long as they
